Hello there! It’s the start of a new year of challenges at CAS Colours & Sketches!

As usual, we’re starting off with a color challenge. Jeanne, our host for the month of January, has chosen some lovely bright, rich colors for us to work with. My brain toyed with the idea of doing something with florals, but I wasn’t completely sold on that, so I decided to browse through some of the other online challenges to see what they had going on. The Paper Players is asking participants to create a birthday card, and AAA Cards has a sketch challenge. The proverbial light bulb went off in my head, and I came up with this:

OK, it may not be the most conventional color trio to see on party hats, but I thought it worked all right.  Grouping the hats was tricky, and I realize that viewing the hats as one whole image, it’s not centered, but oh well.  I know I’m picky about that kind of thing.

I hope you’ll join in the fun and creativity at CC&S! You have until 6:00 p.m. Eastern U.S. time Monday, January 22 to link your card to the challenge post. Thanks for stopping by today!

Supplies:
Stamps: Hats Off to You, So Much to Say, Happy Everything (Lawn Fawn)
Cardstock: Solar White (Neenah); Berry Burst (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: Onyx Black (VersaFine)
Other: markers (Copic); Stitched Rectangle die (Lawn Fawn)

Well hello there!  It’s time for another challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.  This week we have a double challenge for you, combining some retired Stampin’ Up colors with a sketch from the CC&S archives.  The SU color names are used for reference, but of course you can use any companies’ products so long as you match the colors as closely as possible.

I had a couple different ideas in mind for this challenge, and finally decided to make a birthday card.  I stamped the cake image on a scrap of white cardstock, colored it with markers, and fussy cut it.  Then I stamped the sentiment on a white panel of cardstock.  I figured since the letters on the stamp aren’t in a straight line, that I’d just eyeball my stamping, without using any sort of stamp positioner.  The spacing between the lines of text isn’t quite consistent if you look closely, but even my perfectionist self thinks it’s OK.  After I stamped the sentiment, I used a stitched-edge die to cut the panel to the size of the card front.  I attached it to a card base in the yellow challenge color, and used dimensional adhesives to adhere the cake to the card.

Now it’s your turn! Check out the CC&S site for all the challenge details and to see what the rest of the design team has made. Then share your creation(s) with us by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, February 6. We’d love to have you play along with us!

Supplies:
Stamps: Year Three (Lawn Fawn)
Cardstock: Solar White (Neenah); Barely Banana (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: Barely Banana, Pretty in Pink, Rose Red (SU); Tuxedo Black (Memento)
Other: markers (Copic); stitched rectangle die (Lawn Fawn)

Hello there!  It’s time for the first sketch challenge of the month at CAS Colours & Sketches.  I think a lot of different variations can be done with the tag-like shape, and I’m looking forward to seeing what our challenge participants do with it!

I needed to make a birthday card for my brother-in-law, and the sketch fit the bill perfectly.  I knew I wanted to use this image of a gift.  Even though it comes from a Christmas-themed stamp set, it works fine for birthday presents, too.  I stamped it onto two different designer papers, fussy cut it, and pieced it together.  It’s pretty fiddly to fussy cut around the bow and each time I do it I mentally ask myself why I continue to do it, LOL, but I do like the way it turns out.  I had a tall, narrow strip left over from some digital designer paper I had printed years ago.  Just a little bit of trimming made it the right size for the sketch.  Because it’s a repetitive text print, I didn’t think I needed to include a sentiment.  It also qualifies this card for the current challenge at Inkspirational

I had a furry, four-legged shadow while I was working on the card and photographing it.  I warned him that if he didn’t back off, he’d get his picture taken, too.  He didn’t seem to care.  Silly kitty.

What will you do with this sketch?  I hope you’ll try out something and share what you create with us!  Link your work to the CAS Colours & Sketches blog by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, September 19.  Thanks for stopping by today!

Hello there!  It’s the first Tuesday in September, which means that it’s time for a new month of challenges at CAS Colours & Sketches.  As always, we begin the month with a color challenge, and we have some bright, cheery colors for you to work with.

My card went through a few different ideas in my head before I finally got it down with cardstock and ink.  I had this card from a few years ago in the back of my mind, but I wanted to put a different spin on it.  When I was going through my white cardstock file I found a piece of cardstock already cut to the size of a card front, with the “happy birthday” sentiment already stamped on it, so I decided to go ahead and use it.  I cut a circle from a scrap piece of paper to use as a mat and stamped the three dots stamp around it in a sunburst design, alternating the challenge colors.  I just eyeballed my stamping and didn’t worry about getting the dots aligned perfectly.  Then I removed the mask and stamped the cake into place (aiming a bit lower than I should have to get the cake centered in the circle… oops).  Then I colored the cake with Copic markers.  In trying to keep with the “minimal layers” aspect of “clean and simple”, I decided to use mats only in the corners.

I didn’t have the exact colors of ink and cardstock stated in the challenge graphic, so I used the ones I had that matched most closely.  It’s not my most favorite card I’ve ever made, but I still think it’s pretty cute.

Now it’s your turn! Check out the CC&S site for all the challenge details and to see what the rest of the design team has made. Then share your creation(s) with us by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, September 12. We’d love to have you play along with us!

Hello!  I decided to join in the color challenge this week at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I thought the pretty colors worked well for Easter since that’s coming up pretty soon.  I’ve also been eyeing the current AAA Cards challenge and decided to combine that with the color scheme.  I stamped the bunny and some Easter eggs on a scrap of white cardstock, colored them with Copics (trying to match the challenge colors), and fussy cut them.  I opted for a landscape-oriented card using the challenge green for the card base.  To create the little scene, I used a die to cut out a rectangle that was 1/9 the size of the white card front, arranged the bunny and the eggs around it, and attached the white panel to the card base with shims of scrap cardstock underneath it to give it a little dimension.

Thanks for stopping by today!  Remember, the CC&S challenge will remain open until 6:00 p.m. Eastern U.S. time Monday, March 7.  We hope you’ll join in the fun and creativity!

Hello there!  It’s time for the last challenge of the month at CAS Colours & Sketches, and this time it’s a sketch challenge.

Our challenge host, Joanne, has said that any shape can be used in place of the hexagon on the sketch, and CC&S rules allow the sketch to be flipped or rotated.  So I’ve flipped the sketch mirror-image and used a different six-sided shape on my card.  Well, maybe six-“sided” isn’t exactly the right word…  more like six-pointed.  🙂  We haven’t had any new precipitation here in over a week, but it’s been so cold that the ground is still white from the last sleet-covered snowfall.  A snowflake seemed like an easy choice for my card, and the current challenge from Color Hues worked well for that theme.  I masked off the top area of the card and sprayed the bottom with some silver shimmer mist.  While that dried, I cut the snowflake from some shiny silver cardstock and looked through some of my stamps to choose a sentiment.  After I stamped the sentiment using silver ink and glued the snowflake into place, the card still seemed to be missing something, so I added a pearl to the center of the snowflake.

Here’s a closeup photo that does a little better job of showing off the difference between the top “plain” part of the card and the bottom shimmer-misted portion:

And here are the graphics for the two challenges:

Hello there!  It’s time for the first sketch challenge of the year at CAS Colours & Sketches.  It’s a fun one that will provide a lot of opportunity for creativity!

For the “non-geometric shape” element, I looked through my animal stamps and settled on this little fox.  I had used other stamps from this set before, but this was a first for him.  I decided to make him a grey fox rather than a red fox, and colored him with my Copics.  I’m not quite sure yet who this card might be going to, so I went with a gender-neutral purple for the present and the birthday hat.  I set off the horizontal strip part of the sketch by piercing two rows across the focal panel.  I couldn’t very well pierce on a one-layer card, so I attached the focal panel to a card base in a coordinating grey, offsetting the panel for a little extra visual interest.  Because of the way the fox is made, I thought it looked better for him to be on the left side of the card than the right, so I’ve flipped the sketch.

What will you do with this sketch? I hope you’ll try out something and share what you create with us! Link your work to the CAS Colours & Sketches blog by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, January 18. Thanks for stopping by today!

Wow!  It’s already the third Tuesday in November, and that means it’s color challenge time again at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I decided to combine the colors with the sketch from the current AAA Cards challenge and the theme from this week’s challenge at The Paper Players.  I used a tree die for the vertical and horizontal elements of the sketch, and I hope with the wash of color for the sky behind it, that I’m not taking too many liberties with the sketch idea.  The little birdie fills in for the “any shape” element.  I stamped the birdie onto a scrap of cardstock, colored him in the grey and darker purple of the challenge colors, and fussy cut him (even around his tiny little legs!) so I could glue him in place on his perch.  Then I used my stamping platform to help me add the sentiment precisely in place.  I opted to use the grey from the challenge color trio for the card base because it’s neutral and it matched my coloring the best.

What will the CC&S colors inspire you to create?  We’d love to see your clean and simple card in our challenge gallery!  You have until 6:00 p.m. Eastern U.S. time Monday, November 23 to link your card to the challenge post.  Thanks for stopping by today!

Hello there!  After a break for a couple weeks, I’m back at it again with this week’s sketch challenge from CAS Colours & Sketches.  This is a nice little sketch that can be interpreted in various ways, since any shape can be used for the nine background shapes – so you could use nine stars, nine diamonds, nine leaves, or nine of whatever other shape you like.  I’m looking forward to seeing what our challenge participants do with it!

Once I figured out what I wanted to do for my card, it came together pretty easily and quickly.  I decided to use hearts for my shape.  I cut them from red textured cardstock (which, unfortunately, looks kind of orange in my photo, and it’s hard to see the texture).  I cut the word “love” from black cardstock three times and stacked the die cuts together for some dimension.  The stitched rectangle die adds a little extra interest to the kraft panel.

What will you do with this sketch? I hope you’ll try out something and share what you create with us! Link your work to the CAS Colours & Sketches blog by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, November 2. Thanks for stopping by today!

Hello there!  This week’s challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches features some bright, cheery colors.

For today’s card, I originally was thinking I’d probably do something with abstract flowers.  As I was browsing through my folder of white cardstock, I found this piece that had already been cut with a scalloped die.  Then my thought wheels started turning in a different direction.  I decided instead to make the sentiment the focus of the card, using a combination of alphabet stamps and sentiment stamps.  The open outline letters allowed me to color them in an ombre manner with the challenge colors.  I chose to use the middle tone of the challenge trio for the card base.

And there you have it.  What ideas do you have for these colors?  We’d love to see you share your CAS styled card with them at the CC&S site!  You have until 6:00 p.m. Eastern U.S. time Monday, October 12 to link your card at the challenge site.  Thanks for stopping by today!

Hello!  Today starts sketch challenge week at CAS Colours & Sketches and YoonYoung has drawn up a very nice clean and simple one for us!

When I first saw the sketch, I thought it would make a good opportunity to use some designer paper.  I have a huge variety of papers to choose from, so to narrow it down, I took a look at some of my other favorite challenge blogs and saw that The Paper Players is having a theme challenge to create masculine birthday cards.  I picked an argyle print from, I must admit, one of my very oldest packs of designer paper.  I knew this pattern would allow for a sentiment to still be easily read.  The difficult thing about using this pattern is making sure to line it up so that it’s centered on the card front, but after some careful measuring, I think I’ve accomplished that.  I also took the liberty of turning the sketch 180° so that the wider rectangular portion is at the top of the card, and I let the sentiment straddle the line dividing the two parts of the sketch.

So, there you have it!  What will you create with this sketch?  Share your work with us at the CAS Colours & Sketches site by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, September 14. Be sure to check out what the other design team members have made, too!  Thanks for stopping by today!

Hello there!  We have a sketch challenge opening up today at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I took a bit of liberty with the sketch by flipping it mirror image and by changing the shapes from octagons to hexagons and enlarging one of them.  I originally planned to use die-cut hexagons but for some reason that didn’t seem CAS enough to me.  So I used the cardstock from which I’d cut them as stencils and brushed ink into place on the main card panel.  I glued the die-cut snowflakes over the stenciled hexagons.  The larger snowflake was die-cut twice and stacked for a little more dimension.  I wasn’t sure what sentiment I wanted to use so I decided to just leave one off.  I might add one later, but really there’s no reason the card *needs* one.  The card still seemed a little plain, so I went digging through my embellishments and found a half-pearl in just the right color and size to adorn the largest snowflake.

I hope you’ll go see what the rest of the CC&S design team and our August guest designer have done with this sketch. Then make a card of your own and share it with us by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, August 17. Thanks for stopping by today!

Hello there!  It’s time for the last CAS Colours & Sketches sketch challenge for the month of July.  If you go to the challenge site and check out the design teams’ sample cards, you’ll see that we’ve represented the circular element of the sketch in a lot of different ways!

I had “Christmas in July” in the back of my mind, I think, because I’ve chosen to make a Christmas card.  I used one of my favorite snowflake dies to cut a snowflake from shimmery cardstock for the circular element.  I paired a snowflake print patterned paper with a scrap of very subtly patterned paper in a coordinating color for the horizontal striped part of the sketch.  I decided to stamp the sentiment with grey ink because black seemed like it would contrast too harshly with the soft minty colors.  I’ve used linen textured cardstock for the card base so it wouldn’t look quite so plain, but I’m not sure how well that shows in the photo.  I toyed with the idea of adding a rhinestone to the center of the snowflake but in the end decided to leave it as it was.

What will you do with this sketch?  I hope you’ll try out something and share what you create with us! Link your work to the CAS Colours & Sketches blog by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, August 3.  Thanks for stopping by today!

Hello there!  We have a sketch challenge for you this week at CAS Colours & Sketches, and I think it’s a good one for letting our participants’ creativity shine.  The main element of the sketch is a circle, but the other elements can be any shape.

I’ve squashed the sketch into a landscape-oriented rectangle and taken the liberty of using a big, bold sentiment for the main image, with coordinating elements for the smaller shapes.  I stamped the sentiment on designer paper before using a die to cut the circle.  The hats were stamped on scraps of the same paper that were more yellow, so I colored the stripes and the polka dots orange.  The colors match better in real life than in the photo.  I used dimensional adhesive to attach the hats to the card.  I don’t often use black for card bases but this time it worked to let the colors pop.

What will you do with this sketch? I hope you’ll try out something and share what you create with us! Link your work to the CAS Colours & Sketches blog by 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, July 20. Thanks for stopping by today!

CAS Colours & Sketches #377

Hello hello!  It’s Timeless Tuesday at CAS Colours and Sketches, where we have a double challenge for you!  This week we’d like you to create a card using the provided color palette and sketch.

I’m the challenge host this week.  I have to confess that one reason I chose these colors was because they are based on an old pack of designer paper that I do like, but haven’t managed to completely use yet.  Another reason is that I thought that even though these are retired Stampin’ Up colors, there are current colors that are quite similar to these and can be substituted easily.

I actually started out thinking I’d use a floral patterned paper for my card, but I ended up changing my mind at the last minute.  I turned the sketch on its side for my card.  The sentiment is made of three stamps put together – “happy”, “birthday”, and “to you”.  I used markers to color in the stripes on the “happy”.  The sentiment is popped up from the background with dimensional adhesive.  I decided on the green for the card base to help keep the card more gender neutral, since I don’t know yet who its recipient is going to be.

Be sure to go see what the rest of the CC&S Design Team has made for this challenge! Then create a card of your own and share it with us via the linky tool on the CC&S site. You have until 6:00 p.m. Eastern time Monday, July 6 to link your card. We hope you’ll join in the fun and creativity! Thanks for stopping by today.

All supplies except the stamps are from Stampin’ Up.
Stamps: Happy Happy Happy (Lawn Fawn)
Cardstock: Very Vanilla, Certainly Celery, striped paper from Petal Patch designer series paper
Ink: Close to Cocoa
Other: Certainly Celery, Blush Blossom, and Bashful Blue markers, dimensionals
