Squeaking in under the wire, here is the card I made for the April Sketch For You to Try challenge.  I actually made this one a couple weeks ago but kept thinking I’d have time to make “something better” to submit for the challenge. Well, that didn’t happen, so what I have is this very clean and simple version of the sketch.  I inadvertently swapped the long panels when I assembled the card so this is actually a mirror image of the sketch.

This card also uses several of the Desert Islands Crafts Challenge itinerary #29 items: no flowers, red and black, pressure embossing, gray, and rounded corners.

Thanks for stopping by today!

Supplies:
Digital Image: Kolar’s Simple Sayings (K ‘n K Designs)
Cardstock: Going Gray, Real Red, Basic Black, Naturals White (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); Spots and Dots embossing folder (ProvoCraft); standard circle Nestabilities die (Spellbinders); corner rounder punch (EK Success)

I mentioned in my last post that I felt I should make more Any Hero cards for Operation Write Home, to thank the men and women stationed overseas for the work they do.  Today I’m sharing another card made for that purpose.

I used the December Sketch For You To Try for the layout.  The sketch was drawn as a square, but I squooshed it into a rectangle to make a “regular” 4.25″ x 5.5″ card.  When I was coloring the image the eagle’s head turned out darker than I wanted it, but oh well.  I know it would look better if I had a sky and clouds and such in the background, but I didn’t take the time for that and I guess it looks OK the way it is.  It was nice to finally find a use for these mesh star eyelets that I bought at least 5 years ago.

Here’s the original sketch, so you can see how I modified it:

Jen del Muro, the creator of the Sketch For You To Try blog, changed her challenge format from weekly sketches to monthly sketches this year.  I’m glad she did because that allowed me the chance to participate in all 12 challenges.  🙂  Here are links to the other SFYTT cards I’ve made this year:

January – happy o’birthday
February – maybe I auto stop making puns
March – sad bunny misses you
April – beachy birthday
May – challenging cutie pie
June – sketchy Father’s Day
July – hello chickadee
August – rock my world
September – welcome, little girl
October – hello, bee-utiful
November – extra love from Rhubarb

Awww.  Revisiting those cards was fun!  I’m looking forward to another year of sketches in 2012!

Here are the supplies for today’s card:
Digital Images: Eagle (K ‘n K Designs)
Cardstock: Vintage Cream (Papertrey Ink); Brilliant Blue, Western Sky designer paper (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: printer ink
Other: Premier colored pencils (Prismacolor); odorless mineral spirits (Houston Arts); star mesh eyelets (Making Memories); D’vine Swirls embossing folder (ProvoCraft)

Today’s card uses the layout from this week’s Stars & Stamps Blog sketch challenge.  I wanted to make a Valentine for the Operation Write Home Archway Cookie Mission, but I wasn’t in a pink and red hearts mood.  I figured there are parents stationed overseas who would want to send a Valentine home to their sons who aren’t into the typical Valentine stuff, so I chose some non-traditional colors and this dog image.  I rotated the sketch because it seemed to work better that way.

Supplies:
Digital Images: Valentine Kolar (K ‘n K Designs)
Cardstock: Certainly Celery (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink); designer papers from “Sugar Rush” 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Basic Grey)
Ink: printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); standard circle Nestabilities die (Spellbinders)

That’s the yummy color combination for this week’s Splitcoaststampers Clean and Simple challenge!  I think it’s a wonderful, classic combo and if I wasn’t busy trying to catch up on the Hope You Can Cling To challenges, I’d probably make several more cards with it this week.   I’ve already made two, LOL!

The first card is a wintry version of the flap card I made for a Paper Therapy challenge a couple months ago.  I used a marker to draw in the snow line.  The bird was stamped on a scrap of cardstock, cut out, and adhered to the card with dimensional adhesive.  (Remember what I said in my hello, deerie post about trimming dimensionals to fit into skinny little places?  Does this bird have a narrow tail?  Do you think I learned my lesson yet?  🙄 )

I wanted to differentiate the sky from the rest of the card, so I very lightly sponged some very light blue ink behind the tree.  I don’t know if that’s cheating on the challenge requirements or not, so that’s why I made the second card.  I used this week’s Stars & Stamps sketch challenge for the layout.  This one uses an adorable image from K ‘n K Designs created especially for Operation Write Home.  Proceeds from the sale of this set, and a few other special sets, will be donated to OWH to help them with their holiday season shipping costs.  You can get all the details on the K ‘n K Designs blog.  I just found out about this a few days ago and I’m glad I got in on this offer while I could – these images are only available until November 1, 2011!

So there… one challenge, two cards that will be donated to Operation Write Home!  Today is the deadline for shippers to receive Christmas cards, so I’ll be shifting my focus to valentines, “love you” cards and general occasion themes.

Supplies for the tree card:
Stamps: Season of Friendship, Trendy Trees (Stampin’ Up)
Cardstock: Vintage Cream (Papertrey Ink)
Ink: Chocolate Chip, Riding Hood Red, Soft Sky (SU)
Other: Chocolate Chip marker, dimensionals (SU); magnets (Basic Grey); sponge

Supplies for the cat card:
Digital Images: Patriotic Pickles image and sentiment (K ‘n K Designs)
Stamps: Background Basics (Stampin’ Up)
Cardstock: Vintage Cream (Papertrey Ink); Chocolate Chip, Riding Hood Red (SU)
Ink: Riding Hood Red, Chocolate Chip (SU); printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); sponge

OWH VCMP challenges - part two

Sep 152011

I was able to get a few more cards made today for the OWH Virtual Card Making Party challenges.  I suppose I’ll just get right to them…

This one is my favorite of the ones I made today.  It’s also the one that stumped me the most.  Tami at Tami’s Craft Connection had challenged us to make a card that one of our heroes could send home to a child.  That seemed easy enough because I have lots of images that would be suitable for a child.  And that became the problem – I had a really hard time choosing!  I finally decided I’d use one of a boy playing soccer.  It’s a digital image, and I had it all ready to print.  But then I switched over to the Stars and Stamps blog for some reason and the listing for Ciara’s challenge caught my eye.  I clicked on it for the details.  OH. MY.  What an inspirational Gibbs smack that was.  I quickly pulled up this digital image from K ‘n’ K Designs and figured out what I was going to do with it.  And here it is – a combination of Tami’s and Ciara’s challenges:

Michelle at Caffeine & Stamps asked us to “Splish Splash” by making a card that was black and white with a splash of another color.  I chose Marina Mist for the color, did a little embossing with a Cuttlebug folder in my Big Kick, added a few corner punches and brads, and came up with this:

Finally for today, I decided to take on the challenge that Dixie at What’s Next presented: to make a non-traditional Valentine.  I pulled out a Lizzie Anne Designs stamp set that hadn’t seen action since last Valentine’s season.  I’m glad I did.  There are a lot of nice sentiments in it that are love-related and would be great for OWH cards year-round.  I chose one of them for this card.  I added a pleated strip of designer paper for a faux ribbon.

So… three more cards today, plus yesterday’s four, plus my penguin card shared Monday, and my two sample cards for my VCMP challenge… that makes 10 more cards, all unique, to send to OWH!  Hooray! 🙂

It’s Sunday, which means there’s a new sketch challenge on the Operation Write Home Stars & Stamps blog!  I had volunteered to make a sample card for one of their sketch challenges, and the sketch I was given is the one presented this week.

I decided to make a birthday card using this adorable digital image from K ‘n K Designs.  The accompanying sentiment makes me smile every time I read it.  I substituted a die-cut balloon for the circle element of the sketch because I felt that tied in with the theme.

I hope you’ll play along in the challenge, and choose to send some cards to Operation Write Home so that our military members overseas can keep in touch with their families here.

Supplies:
Digital Images: Kolar’s Birthday (K ‘n K Designs)
Cardstock: Baja Breeze, Cajun Craze, Certainly Celery (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink); “Radical” from Offbeat 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Basic Grey)
Other: Premier colored pencils (Prismacolor); odorless mineral spirits (Houston Arts); balloon die (Sizzix); embroidery floss (DMC)

I have to say I learned quite a few things during Operation Write Home’s Valentine blog hop. The most enjoyable thing was seeing all the fantastic cards others have created, and realizing that they are all going to help spread some happiness to our brave military members far from home and to their families here in the states.

One really neat thing I found out is that if OWH receives 4000 Valentines by December 1, Archway Cookies will donate 4000 cookies to our troops overseas!  Click here for more details on this special mission!

I also discovered some super cute digital images from a company called K ‘n K Designs.  Katlyn, the company owner, is being generous enough to offer the Valentine Kolar set FREE if you email her by noon (central time) Monday, Nov. 15!  See the K ‘n K Designs website for more details.

I thought Kolar was really cute, and I have to admit I love freebies, so I went for the offer.  Today’s card is my first creation with this set.  I kept it pretty quick and simple.  I also wanted to keep it fairly generic so it could be given to either a boy or a girl of any age.  The sky and grass are sponged, and Kolar is colored with Copic markers.  The ribbon does match the red heart better in real life than it does in the photo.

Supplies:
Digital Images: Valentine Kolar (K ‘n K Designs)
Cardstock: Certainly Celery (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink); “Orange Slices” from Sugar Rush 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Basic Grey)
Ink: Bashful Blue, Certainly Celery (SU)
Other: markers (Copic); ribbon (Offray); petite oval and petite scalloped oval Nestabilities (Spellbinders); sponges

So with this card and the one in yesterday’s post, now I have two Valentine’s Day cards ready to send Operation Write Home for the cookie mission! I realize this is an especially busy time of year for everyone, with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming soon, but I hope that my cardmaking friends will join me in this endeavor.  My goal is to send 10 by the end of November. Think I can do it? 🙂
