You might be looking at that title and thinking “WHAT?!? It isn’t even Christmas yet!”  But if you’re interested in creating valentines for Operation Write Home, your shipper will need to receive them by December 31, 2011.  That will allow time for the shippers to send them to our military men and women stationed overseas so that they can use them to write back to their family and friends at home.  Of course, cards simply saying “I love you” or “sending you love” or similar messages are welcome any time of the year!

Here’s one of the valentines I’ve made for OWH.  It was really quick and simple to create.  I printed off the heart, cut it out, added the flowers, stamped the sentiment on the card base, and attached the heart.  Easy peasy!

Feel welcome to share your valentines at the OWH Stars and Stamps blog!

Supplies:
Digital Image: Heart 3 (InStyle Stamps)
Sentiment: So Much Love (Lizzie Anne Designs)
Cardstock: Whisper White, Poppy Parade (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: Onyx Black (VersaFine); printer ink
Other: flowers (Prima Marketing); brads (Making Memories)

Since I slipped up and forgot to post earlier in the week, I decided to share two cards with y’all today.

The first one is just an easy peasy one using this week’s Stars and Stamps sketch.  I had printed the digital image a while ago, so all I needed to do now was color it and cut it to size.  Embossing the background took just a few moments. I decided to use twine instead of ribbon, so I used three pieces to give some width to that feature of the sketch.  And within about 20 minutes, I had a card.

I actually made today’s second card about a week ago.  This time InStyle Stamps’ Chloe is happy to present someone with a gift.  I’ve always interpreted it as a birthday gift, but there’s no reason this image couldn’t be used for any other gift-giving occasion – Christmas, Hanukkah, Mother’s or Father’s Day, or even as a thank you.  Just change the colors and add a sentiment of your own to suit your needs.  That’s one thing I love about creating my own cards – there’s no really “right” or “wrong” way to make them!

Anyway, back to the card.  I used the Stars and Stamps Sketch Challenge #83 for the layout and decided to make it a birthday card.  During the OWH CAS Blog Skip a few weeks ago, Kate at Hello from Kate! had used this floral print designer paper with the sandy-colored background.  I’d always been kind of stumped as to how to use it, and she inspired me to give it a try.  So I paired it with a multicolored stripe paper from the same package, and used the colors in the striped paper to determine my color scheme for the card.  After all,  just because there’s a girl on the card it doesn’t mean the card has to be pink.

And there they are – two more cards for Operation Write Home.

Supplies for the bunny card:
Digital Image: Bunny Hug (Amber Ink.)
Cardstock: Kraft, Pink Pirouette (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink)
Ink: printer ink
Other: Premier colored pencils (Prismacolor); odorless mineral spirits (Houston Arts); D’vine Swirls embossing folder (ProvoCraft); brown sugar twine (Really Reasonable Ribbon)

Supplies for the Chloe card:
Digital Image: Birthday Chloe (InStyle Stamps)
Sentiment: It’s Your Birthday (Stampin’ Up)
Cardstock: Bashful Blue, Delicate Dots designer paper (SU); Basics White (Papertrey Ink)
Ink: Bashful Blue (SU); printer ink
Other: Premier colored pencils (Prismacolor); circle and petite scalloped circle Nestabilities dies (Spellbinders)

Sheesh. I’ve been so busy making cards to send to Operation Write Home that I’ve been neglecting to blog them!

Here’s one I made yesterday.  I incorporated four of the itinerary elements for Desert Islands Crafts Challenge #14 into it.  I’ve paper pieced Chloe’s shirt and jeans, the card base is kraft cardstock, I’ve ruffled the ribbon, and the sentiment is made with alphabet stickers.  I also used the color scheme from one of last weekend’s Virtual Stamp Night challenges at Splitcoaststampers – denim blue, ivory and brown.

I couldn’t figure out what to add to the image to make it look like Chloe wasn’t just floating in midair.  I considered adding some green behind her to make it look like she was sitting in grass, but that would have required either trying to draw or sponge in realistic-looking grass, or cutting out the entire image of her and putting it over green designer paper to simulate grass.  Then I decided to scrap that idea because it would mess up the color scheme.  I also thought about drawing a bench or something, but my drawing skills are not very good (drawing grass is the extent of my abilities!) and I was afraid I’d mess up the whole thing.

So, readers: Please leave me a comment with a reasonable suggestion for something I can add to the image next time I use it to make it look like Chloe is actually sitting on something.  There just might be a little somethin’ somethin’ in it for the person who gives the suggestion I like best!  😉

Supplies:
Digital Image: Sitting Chloe (InStyle Stamps)
Cardstock: Kraft (Stampin’ Up); Vintage Cream (Papertrey Ink); designer papers from “Memoirs” 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Inque Boutique)
Ink: Chocolate Chip, Crumb Cake (SU)
Other: markers (Copic); alphabet stickers (ProvoCraft); ivory grosgrain ribbon (source unknown); dimensional adhesive (SU); sponge

Patty also knows that July is National Ice Cream Month.  How awesome is that, to have another reason to eat ice cream!  😉  She’s decided to share some with a friend:

(Note to self:  In order to retain sanity, do not paper piece the little bitty cherries on the tops of the ice cream cones again.)

Supplies:
Digital Image: Patty Summer Luvin (InStyle Stamps)
Sentiment: Summertime Celebration (Lizzie Anne Designs)
Cardstock: Pink Pirouette, Very Vanilla (Stampin’ Up); various papers from Blush 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Basic Grey)

Whew – I did it!  My goal for the Operation Write Home Start the Second Million Challenge was to send 50 cards to them.  I finished making card #50 Sunday night!  Now I need to box them all up so I can get them in today’s mail.  Priority Mail should get them to my shipper before the June 30 deadline.  Of course, this doesn’t bring an end to my making cards for OWH.  It just means that now I’ll be starting on another box of cards to send them! 🙂

Today I’m sharing a couple of the Thinking of You themed cards that are in this shipment.  I created both of them with the idea that our heroes overseas could send them home to their child.

The first card uses a digital image from InStyle Stamps and a sentiment stamp I found in the dollar bin at Michael’s.  I thought it was a great sentiment for OWH cards. You can see some of the liner cardstock peeking out on the inside back of the card.  Since our heroes generally don’t have access to ink that will show up on dark cardstock, dark cards need to be lined with a light color. The layout is based on the Stars & Stamps blog sketch #74; I’ve simply changed the circle in the sketch to an oval.

The next card uses some more of those adorable Lawn Fawn stamps.  This whole scene is created from scraps of Basic Grey designer papers, except for the sky because that needed a kind of large piece.

I imagine it would be really difficult to be stationed overseas far away from my children – even more so if they were younger than they are now.  Making these cards is my way of telling our military members “thank you” for the sacrifices they make in order to make our world a safer place.

Supplies for the first card:
Digital image: Jacob (InStyle Stamps)
Sentiment stamp: Studio G
Cardstock: Close to Cocoa, Baja Breeze (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink); designer paper from Memoirs 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Inque Boutique)
Ink: Close to Cocoa (SU – for sentiment); printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); petite oval Nestabilities die (Spellbinders)

Supplies for the second card:
Stamps: Critters in the ‘Burbs, Sophie’s Sentiments (Lawn Fawn)
Cardstock: Vintage Cream (Papertrey Ink – for card base); designer papers from Ambrosia, Kioshi, and Phoebe 6″ x 6″ paper pads (Basic Grey)
Ink: Tuxedo Black (Memento); Green Galore (SU)
Other: sponge

I’ll admit it: even though I love crafting challenges, the inspiration challenges – where you are assigned a photo from which to draw inspiration for your creation – tend to be the most difficult for me.  I can’t really explain why that’s so.  I guess I feel a little overwhelmed by the choices – do I use the colors, or something from the layout, or does the photo remind me of something?

That wasn’t the case with this month’s InStyle Stamps Inspiration Challenge.  When I saw the inspiration photo, I knew right away that I wanted to use the yummy colors with this cupcake image.  I tweaked the OWH Stars & Stamps sketch #63 for the layout by rotating the card 90°, widening the image panel, and shifting the panel and the embellishment to the center of the card. Here’s my finished creation:

I dug out my bottle of Crystal Lacquer and added some to the dome to make it look more like glass. I haven’t used that stuff in a long time and it was pretty thick, so I had to use a paintbrush to apply it to the image.

Oh, here’s the inspiration photo:

This week’s OWH Stars & Stamps Midweek Throwdown is to make an Any Hero card – one with a note of appreciation and encouragement that would be delivered to a service member overseas to pick up his or her spirits.  I think if I can get over my shyness about what to write in an Any Hero card, I’m going to use this card for that purpose in my next shipment to Operation Write Home.

The supply list for today’s card:
Stamps: Tia’s Appreciation (InStyle Stamps)
Cardstock: Marina Mist (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink); designer paper from Cabana 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Inque Boutique)
Ink: printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); Crystal Lacquer (Sakura); Buttercup grosgrain ribbon (Really Reasonable Ribbon)

Happy Thursday!  The weekend is almost here, hooray!  It’s hard to believe April is about halfway over already.

Today’s card was made with three challenges in mind.  I used the April InStyle Stamps sketch challenge for the layout and the April InStyle Stamps color challenge for the color scheme.  I also used the following elements from Desert Islands Crafters Challenge #5: ribbon, a birthday theme, a bow, dots, pearls, and bright colors.

Supplies:
Stamps: present from Patty’s Appreciation (InStyle Stamps); Friendly Greetings (Hero Arts)
Cardstock: Basics White (Papertrey Ink); Daffodil Delight, Chocolate Chip, Prints designer series paper (Stampin’ Up)
Ink: Chocolate Chip (SU); printer ink
Other: markers (Copic); Chocolate Chip grosgrain ribbon (SU); standard circles Nestabilities dies (Spellbinders); self-adhesive pearls (KaiserCraft)

Hello!  Today I’m excited to be participating in my first InStyle Stamps Design Team blog hop!  Join us on the last Friday of every month for some great projects and inspiration!

I was put at the beginning of the hop.  There’s no pressure in going first, is there?  😉  Unless you’re one of my regular visitors, you should have come here directly from the InStyle Stamps company blog.  If you didn’t start there, you’ll want to check back to get all the fun details about this hop.

The blog hop theme this month is Springtime, and seeing the daffodils bloom is one sure way to let me know that Spring has arrived.  I decided to use the daffodil from the Patty Bunny Wuv set for my card.  I know, I’ve already used it several times this month, but I just really love this image!  It seems so cheerful to me.  I wanted to color it to try to look like my Smiling Sun daffodils, but I had to mute the yellow some so it wouldn’t clash with the designer paper and the cardstock I wanted to use.  I drew in the grass by hand so the flower wouldn’t just seem to be floating in space.  The card’s layout is a mirror image of this month’s InStyle Stamps sketch challenge layout.  I thought with the daffodil facing left, it looked better when I flipped the sketch. If you like the sketch, you have until 11:59 pm Pacific Time Tuesday, April 5 to enter the challenge for a chance to win at least one digital image from InStyle Stamps!  Click the link to the sketch challenge for more deets on that.  I decided to use a scalloped edge on the circular part of the sketch and add a bit of piercing to it.  I couldn’t decide on a sentiment to use, so I decided to leave it plain.  That way when I send the card to Operation Write Home, one of our military heroes can use it for any occasion.

Thanks for hopping with me today!  Here’s the rest of the blog hop lineup:

I’ve seen some daffodils blooming in my area, although the ones in my flower border haven’t opened yet.  So the flowers on today’s card will just have to suffice for making today feel like Spring has finally arrived.

Today’s card uses this week’s Paper Therapy sketch challenge layout and this month’s InStyle Stamps color combination.  The color combo allowed me to use some of my retired Stampin’ Up products.  For the focal panel, I used the daffodil image from Patty Bunny Wuv and repeated it twice.  Patty Bunny Wuv is available at the InStyle Stamps store as a set of unmounted rubber stamps, but as a design team member, I was able to get this one image in digital format. That allowed me to tweak it a bit – my daffodils are just slightly different sizes, since in nature they wouldn’t all be exactly alike, know what I mean? I apologize if that throws anybody off if they’re interested in purchasing this stamp set. In retrospect I probably shouldn’t have tweaked. Sigh… that’s part of the fun of digi images, though! Anyway… I colored the flowers with Copic markers.  I decided to show off my totally awesome drawing skills (LOL!) by adding some grass to ground the daffodils, so they wouldn’t look like they were just floating around.

And now I have another card for Operation Write Home!

So, here is the card:

And here is the supply list:
Image: daffodil from Patty Bunny Wuv (InStyle Stamps)
Cardstock: Soft Sky, Groovy Guava, Wild Wasabi, Afternoon Tea designer paper (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink)
Other: markers (Copic); Soft Sky ribbon, filigree brad (SU)

Here in Virginia the weather keeps teasing us, going back and forth between warm sunny days and cold rainy ones. The mountains east of us had a dusting of snow on them Tuesday, and (yuck alert) yesterday morning we got a little sleet mixed in with the rain. Personally, I’m ready for more of the warm sunny days!

My daffodils and tulips are growing again, so I suppose Spring really is on its way. The daffodils have buds, but the stems are only about 8 inches tall so they still need to do some more growing before they’ll bloom.

Today’s card brings a daffodil in full bloom.  The image is from one of InStyle Stamps‘ newest sets, Patty’s Bunny Wuv.  I used Copic markers to color the image and used Nestabilities to cut out the image panel and its mat.  The layout is a tweaked version of sketch #54 from the Operation Write Home Stars and Stamps blog.  I hadn’t made a square card for a long time so I just kind of scrunched up the rectangular layout to make it a square.  I added some designer papers and a ribbon cinched with some twine, and then assembled it all.  I used dimensional adhesive to pop up the daffodil panel.

I had the current Desert Islands Crafts Challenge in my mind as I was working on this card.  The elements I chose were making a square card, using nature as inspiration, having a hand colored image, using two or more patterned papers, using twine, and not putting a sentiment on the card.  The card also works into the Stars & Stamps blog’s Midweek Throwdown challenge to use polka dots on a card for a hero to send home.

Supplies:
Digital Image: daffodil from Patty’s Bunny Wuv (In Style Stamps)
Cardstock: Daffodil Delight, Tea Party designer paper, Prints series designer paper (Stampin’ Up); Vintage Cream (Papertrey Ink)
Other: markers (Copic); Buttercup ribbon and Apple baker’s twine (Really Reasonable Ribbon); standard circle and big scalloped circle Nestabilities dies (Spellbinders)

In the spirit of full disclosure, the image used on today’s project was provided to me by InStyle Stamps to aid in promoting their products.

Both of my sons really enjoy playing video games, whether it’s on the Xbox 360 or the Wii.  So when I saw this stamp at InStyle Stamps, I immediately wanted to get it to make cards for them. It looks so much like a younger version of my boys!

Today’s card is the birthday card I recently made for my older son.  I used the current In Style Stamps sketch challenge sketch, but changed it up from a horizontal layout to a vertical one.  I also used a diamond shape where the original sketch had a circle.  The color scheme came from a recent color challenge at Splitcoaststampers.com.

If you’re interested in participating in this sketch challenge, it’s not too late!  You have until 11:59 pm (Pacific time) March 1 to link your card to the sketch challenge post linked above on the InStyle Stamps blog.

Supplies:
Stamps: Ben (InStyle Stamps)
Cardstock: Daffodil Delight, Cajun Craze, Not Quite Navy (Stampin’ Up); Basics White (Papertrey Ink)
Ink: Onyx Black (VersaFine)
Other: markers (Copic); Happy Birthday embossing folder (ProvoCraft); diamond nesting dies (Dies Direct)

My 12-year-old son groaned when he saw the sentiment on this card.  I don’t think he enjoys puns on cards very much.  I can’t claim credit for this one, though.  My friend Victoria helped me out with it.

I used a digital image called Lil Car from InStyle Stamps for my focal point.  One thing that’s great about digital images vs. rubber stamps is that it’s really easy to manipulate the image if you want to.  For this card layout I thought the car would look better facing left than right, so I flipped the image horizontally.  I used the February Sketch for You to Try sketch for the layout.  I also wanted to join in the Desert Island Crafts Challenge and fit in 5 of their required elements for the challenge: buttons, only one patterned paper, the color red, no flowers, and swirls.  I guess I could even stretch the “movie or book inspired” element by claiming this was inspired by the movie Cars since Lightning McQueen is mostly red.  LOL

For the image panel, I printed out the car twice.  I colored the road and puffs of smoke on the one I used for the background using Copic markers and used a Nestabilities die to cut it into the circular shape.  On the second image, I colored the body and windows of the car with Copics and then cut out that much of the car with my Cutterbee scissors.  I glued a couple of buttons in place for the tires, and then I used pop dots to adhere the cut out car to the panel. The sentiment was printed using a font called Chinacat.

Supplies:
Digital Image: Lil Car (InStyle Stamps)
Cardstock: Marigold Morning, Real Red, Naturals White (Stampin’ Up); “Marmalade” from Ambrosia 6″ x 6″ paper pad (Basic Grey)
Other: markers R29, R46, C3 and C5 (Copic); buttons (Bazzill); embroidery floss (DMC); standard circle Nestabilities die (Spellbinders); pop dots (Plaid)

Here’s what the original sketch looks like:

Hello!  Today I’ll be sharing the last of the Valentine-type projects I’ve made this year.  If you’re looking for the Virtual Valentine’s Day Blog Hop, you’ll want to click here: BLOG HOP post

Being on the InStyle Stamps design team has given me the chance recently to work with some really neat products from Plaid.  I received an assortment of Mod Podge glues, two colors of Extreme Glitter, Pop Dots and Mini Pop Dots.  Because I was feeling under the weather when I was working on these projects I didn’t get too adventuresome with the products, but hopefully soon I’ll be able to play with them some more.

Before I show you my projects, I want to talk about the Extreme Glitter.  I have to admit that for years I’ve stayed as far away from glitter as humanly possible.  I really despise the way it gets all over the place and sticks to everything and flakes off your project and you can’t get rid of it.  Well, Extreme Glitter is very different. It’s like a cross between a glue and a paint with lots of glitter mixed into it.  You simply brush it onto your project with a paint brush and let it dry. When I was just playing with the Extreme Glitter to try it out, I painted a reasonably thick (about 1/16″) coat of it on a scrap piece of cardstock. I gave it about an hour to dry, per the directions on the bottle.  Then I took my glittered scrap of cardstock and I rubbed my fingers over the glitter.  And I bent the cardstock.  And I cut into the painted part.   And the glitter seriously DID NOT FLAKE OFF!!!  I am SO impressed by that!  I thought, “WOW – this gives Operation Write Home cardmakers a way to use glitter safely on their cards!” (Glitter that flakes off onto our heroes’ clothing can be detected by night vision equipment, putting them at higher risk of danger – so glitter is generally a big no-no on OWH cards.)  I never thought I’d like glitter, but Extreme Glitter is helping me see it in a whole new light.

So now, here’s the card I made.  Because I plan to donate it to Operation Write Home and their Valentine’s Day deadline is long past, I wanted to keep it a kind of generic “love” theme.  The layout for the card is this month’s InStyle Stamps sketch challenge.  I used the InStyle Stamps Kissing Birds image.  Isn’t it adorable?  After I colored the birds with Copic markers, I painted their wings with red Extreme Glitter.  (I love that the wings are heart shaped.  TOO CUTE!) I added some designer papers from Basic Grey’s Sugar Rush 6″ x 6″ paper pad and a sentiment from Lizzie Anne Designs’ stamp set So Much Love.  The circle and scalloped circle were cut with Nestabilities dies and attached to the card with mini Pop Dots. I didn’t have a very good photography day so I don’t know how well you’ll be able to see the glitter in the photo.

Next… Several months ago, I found an 8″ x 6″ rectangular tin on clearance at Michael’s for only $1.99 (the original price was something like $7.99).   I knew I’d be able to decorate it and put it to use some day – and the Plaid products gave me the opportunity to do it.  I decided to make it a kind of a treasure box to put special things in, like the birthday cards my sons give me.  I chose some papers from Basic Grey’s Blush collection, cut them to the size needed to cover the sides and top of the tin, and used Matte Mod Podge to adhere the papers to the tin.  Mom Love, one of InStyle Stamps’ newest digital images, is gracing the top of the tin.  She’s on a Nestabilities Labels Eight die cut.  I colored much of her with Copic markers, but decided to paper piece her dress and hair bow with another paper from the BG Blush collection.  Her string of hearts is also paper pieced from one of the Blush papers.  The paper for the hearts is red, and I brushed a thin coat of iridescent Extreme Glitter over the hearts before I cut them out.  (And no glitter flaked off when I cut them!)  I added the phrase “Things I Love” with the sticker letters from the Blush collection.  I considered adding some Prima flowers to the top of the tin because it looks a little plain to me, but my 12-year-old son told me it looked good the way it was.  I may just go back and add some anyway.  😉

Here’s another photo that shows the side of the tin better, so you can see how the colors of the papers really do coordinate.  (Did I mention that I had a bad photography day when I was working on these projects?)

Thanks for looking at my projects today!  If you have any questions about them, feel welcome to ask in a comment!

In the spirit of full disclosure, the images used on today’s projects were provided to me by InStyle Stamps to aid in promoting their products.

Good Monday morning!  It’s time for the next Paper Therapy weekly challenge!  This week the challenge is to make a card in a shape other than a rectangle or a square.

With Valentine’s Day coming up in less than a month, it seemed only natural to make a heart-shaped card.  I used Heart 3, a digital image from InStyle Stamps, for the main focal point.  Aren’t the elaborate swirls in it just fabulous?  I sized it to about 4″ x 4″, printed it out in black, and cut around it with my trusty Cutterbee scissors, leaving about a 1/8″ border all around the image.   I decided to add some Prima flowers to the solid part of the heart, and my red ones were a nearly identical color match to Stampin’ Up’s Poppy Parade cardstock.  I cut a piece of Poppy Parade to 4 1/4″ x 8 1/2″, folded it in half for my card base, used temporary adhesive to attach the printed heart to the card, and then cut around it to get my heart-shaped card.  Then I took the printed heart off so I could attach the flowers with some gold brads, and re-adhered it with permanent adhesive.

And there it is – a very sweet and simple card, but it will be easy to mail to someone to show them a little love.

Supplies:
Digital Image: Heart 3 (InStyle Stamps)
Cardstock: Poppy Parade, Whisper White (Stampin’ Up)

If you are in the mood for more Valentine projects, be sure to stop by this coming weekend because I’ll be participating in the Made With Heart Valentine Blog Hop!  The hop runs from Friday, January 21 through Sunday, January 23.  There will be lots of fantastic projects to see and probably even some blog candy up for grabs along the way.  Who knows – I may even surprise my readers by giving away some goodies!  🙂

In the spirit of full disclosure, the image used on today’s project was provided to me by InStyle Stamps to aid in promoting their products.
