Hello!  This week at CAS Colours & Sketches, we have a very simple sketch for you to try!

I have to confess that for how simple the sketch appears, I struggled with it.  I fully admit that I’m my own worst critic, but my first attempt ended up looking to me like something a four-year-old might make, so I went back to the proverbial drawing board.  I wanted to include the color scheme from the current Color Hues challenge.  After a bunch of playing around with how to layer the die cut sentiment, and whether to use a colored card base, I finally got this put together:

I still don’t love my card, but it’s a lot better than the first one! At least it uses up a little of some very old purple cardstock that I had in my stash. I may try some other ideas with different sentiments and see how that goes. Stay tuned…

Hello again!  It’s sketch week at CAS Colours & Sketches, and we have a good one for you!  We’d like to see some sort of curved element as the focal point of your card.

I turned the sketch 90 degrees on its side for my card, and used a rainbow to represent the curve.  I die cut the rainbow’s stripes and the clouds from shimmery white cardstock, and then used markers to color the stripes.  It wasn’t easy to capture the shimmer in the photograph, but it’s there.  I used shims from the cardstock scraps behind the clouds and the rainbow to give it a little dimension off the card base.  A simple sentiment finished off the card.

Well hi there!  It’s sketch week again at CAS Colours & Sketches.  I think this one can be interpreted in multiple ways, and I’m looking forward to seeing how our challenge participants use it!

I decided to rotate the sketch 90° to the left and have the banner element go horizontally across my card.  I chose my trusty scripty “hello” die for the focal point of my banner, and gave it a rainbow striped background that I created by blending gel sticks on shimmery white paper.  Since the middle rainbow stripe was yellow, I picked that color for the main card panel.

Hello there!  We have a sketch challenge for you this week at CAS Colours & Sketches, and I think it’s a good one for letting our participants’ creativity shine.  The main element of the sketch is a circle, but the other elements can be any shape.

I’ve squashed the sketch into a landscape-oriented rectangle and taken the liberty of using a big, bold sentiment for the main image, with coordinating elements for the smaller shapes.  I stamped the sentiment on designer paper before using a die to cut the circle.  The hats were stamped on scraps of the same paper that were more yellow, so I colored the stripes and the polka dots orange.  The colors match better in real life than in the photo.  I used dimensional adhesive to attach the hats to the card.  I don’t often use black for card bases but this time it worked to let the colors pop.

Hello!  Today starts sketch challenge week at CAS Colours & Sketches and YoonYoung has drawn up a very nice clean and simple one for us!

When I first saw the sketch, I pictured an opportunity to weave strips of cardstock or patterned paper for the horizontal and vertical blocks.  I’ve tried weaving cardstock strips in the past and knew that the thickness of cardstock can be hard to manipulate sometimes.  So when it came to actually sitting down and making today’s card, time and patience wore me down to using just two strips of designer paper for each block to accomplish the woven look.  A white card base seemed to contrast too starkly with the designer papers, so I chose cardstock that complemented the colors in the patterns.  I’ve flipped the sketch mirror image just to give a little variety in the design team’s cards for the sketch.

Hello!  This week’s color challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches is a little different, but I hope you’ll give it a try!

I’ll admit the colors had me stumped for a good while.  That was probably at least partly because I don’t own any of these actual colors, so I knew I’d have to figure out which colors I do own that are closest to the challenge colors.  Finally I thought I’d try to use them as a background for a large sentiment.  I found an old background block stamp and inked it up, using the lavender color toward the middle of the block, with the reddish-brown color surrounding it, and then the dark teal just on the edges of the stamp.  Then I held the stamp under the mist from a water bottle before stamping it onto white cardstock.  When I picked the stamp up off the cardstock, I learned that over the years, the edges of the stamp have curved in just enough that they barely made an impression on the cardstock.  Ooops.  But I decided to go along with it anyway.  I die cut the word “happy” from the coordinating teal cardstock, attached it to the card front, and stamped the word “birthday” below it.  It still seemed a little too blah so I used a stitched rectangle die to trim the excess cardstock from around the image, and then matted that with the teal cardstock before attaching it to a white card base.

It’s not one of my favorite cards.  It doesn’t have as much white space as I think a clean and simple card should have.  But it isn’t really a “bad” card.  I may try going back to the proverbial drawing board and give these colors another go with some different idea.

Well hi there!  It’s sketch week again at CAS Colours & Sketches.  We have a really simple one that can be interpreted in multiple ways.

I decided to rotate the sketch 180° and use some rainbow dies I hadn’t used before.  I cut the rainbow stripes from shimmery white cardstock and colored them with Copics, so when the light shines on the card just right, you can see a hint of sparkle in the rainbow.

Hello there!  It’s sketch challenge week at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I went the easy route (for me) and did some paper piecing for the images on my card, rather than stamping and coloring.  It was a fun way to use some scraps of designer paper!  After I stamped the kitty, I stamped her head a couple more times, so that I could stack them and give her a little dimension.  After I had everything stamped I realized that the cat bed was actually shorter than the sentiment strip, which is opposite of the way the rectangular elements of the sketch are drawn, but I do think the sketch remains recognizable in my card.

As usual for me in January, I start out the year thinking that I’m going to join in more cardmaking challenges throughout the year like I used to, and then something happens that takes the proverbial wind out of my sails.  Oh well.  Anyway, here’s this year’s first attempt at this endeavor.

I’ve combined the sketch from Freshly Made Sketches with the color scheme provided by The Paper Players.  I felt like the tulip followed the lines of the mirror image of the sketch pretty well, and I stamped it using the colors from the color challenge.  Unfortunately, my Poppy Parade ink pad wasn’t as inky as I thought, and that’s the darkest I could get that color ink to work with just one impression from the stamp.  (I needed to get the card in the mail so I didn’t take the time to re-ink the ink pad or do multiple impressions with the stamp.)  It’s not one of my best cards but I really do like the sketch.

Hello there!  October has five Tuesdays, so that means it’s Timeless Tuesday double challenge week at CAS Colours & Sketches!  Karen and I worked together to come up with this week’s challenge – she chose some of Stampin’ Up’s retired colors, and I picked a previous CC&S sketch to use with them.  Although we use Stampin’ Up color names for reference, you may use any companies’ products to make your card, so long as you match the colors closely.  You’re also welcome to turn the sketch on its side or flip it mirror-image.

The colors seemed to suggest “winter” to me, so I pulled out my favorite snowman stamp and colored his hat and scarf using two of the colors.  I added some snowflakes around him in the third color.  I used the matching color cardstocks for the card base and the sketch elements.  I die cut a snowflake from the darker blue cardstock for the circular element and covered it with some Wink of Stella pen to give it sparkle.  When I attached it to the banner element, something about it just didn’t look right to me, so I die cut a smaller snowflake from shimmery white cardstock and attached it on top of the blue one.  That looked better, but I felt it was still missing something, so I topped it off with a rhinestone in the center.  That did the trick!

Hello there!  It’s time for a new color challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I decided to create a little scene on my card.  For each color, I pressed the ink pad onto an acrylic block and spritzed the ink with water; then I painted a wash of color onto the cardstock (the red, bright blue, and grey were done on scraps; the pale blue was done on a card front).  I stamped the balloons and the elephant onto their respective colors after the washes dried.  When the pale blue was dry, I masked off a small area at the bottom of it and dabbed red and blue ink into the area to create a ground for the elephant.  Then I fussy cut the elephant and balloons, positioned them into place so I knew where to draw in the balloon strings, and then glued everything to the card front.  Finally I attached the card front to a pale blue card base.  I opted not to put a sentiment on the card.  I’ll be donating it to Send a Smile 4 Kids, and I figured without a sentiment, it could be used for a wider variety of occasions.

I kept the current AAA Cards challenge in the back of my head while I was figuring out the layout for my scene.

Well hello there!  It’s the first Tuesday of the month, which means we have a new hostess of the month over at CAS Colours & Sketches!  YoonYoung has planned some fun things for us this time, and she’s starting us off with a really nice pastel color challenge.

When I was trying to decide what to make for this challenge, the idea of using kraft with the challenge colors stuck in my head.  But none of my image stamps really seemed “right” to use with that combination.  I finally decided to use the colors for a sentiment and make that the focal point of the card.  I die cut the word “hello” from a panel slightly smaller than a card front.  I adhered scraps of cardstock in the challenge colors to the card base so that they would show through the die cut word.  I originally planned to use dimensional adhesive to pop up the front panel from the card base, but quickly realized that would be a pain to use with the insides of the “e” and the “o”, so I attached the panel directly to the card base and then glued the insides of the letters in place.  I opted not to include the inner loops of the “h” and the “l”s – that was too fiddly even for me, LOL!

Hello there!  It’s time for another color challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.  We have some bright, cheery colors to work with this week.

I kind of dove into the “cheer” aspect of the colors and made a birthday card.  I started by cutting the white panel to size.  Then I stamped the sentiment at the bottom, which I thought paired well with the image stamps I chose.  Next I stamped the “wax” part of the candles.  For the flames, I inked the stamp first with yellow, and then touched my orange ink pad to the stamp just enough to grab a little of the orange color before pressing it onto the cardstock.  I decided to offset the panel when I mounted it to the card base.

I don’t think it’s one of my better cards, but it is definitely clean and simple in style, with minimal layers and lots of open space!

Hello there!  It’s time for another sketch challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.

I’ll admit my card didn’t turn out exactly the way I’d envisioned it in my mind, but I suppose it’s okay and that the sketch can be seen easily enough in it.  I deviated a bit from the simple curved lines, turning the bottom one into ground for my two animal friends, and turning the top one into a cloud-shaped speech balloon.  I moved the sentiment up into the speech balloon, but I think the animals help to fill in the middle area where the sentiment is indicated on the sketch.  I did get to use up some scraps for this card – in fact, even the card base was the leftover piece remaining in my cardstock folder from an earlier card.

Hello!  Welcome to the start of a new year of challenges at CAS Colours & Sketches!  We’re back from our holiday break and ready to begin another year of fun clean and simple challenges! Since today is the second Tuesday of the month, we’re starting back up again with a sketch.

Even though the snow we had in December has melted and become just a memory, I couldn’t resist pulling out one of my favorite snowman stamps and using it for today’s card.  Except for the card base, I used only scraps of cardstock for this card!  Yay!  I used shimmery white for all of the white cardstock.  I colored the snowman with Copics and fussy cut him – and cutting around his arms and scarf reminded me why I usually use his matching die when I want to cut him out.  Oh well.  I used a swirly die to cut the swooping horizontal line element of the sketch twice and stacked them for extra dimension.  I debated using kraft cardstock for the base, but felt the white-on-white gave the card a more wintry feel. The sentiment comes from a different stamp set than the snowman.
